Jerry Chen is a partner at TKLG and focuses his practice on litigation and strategic IP counseling.
In over a decade of practice, Jerry has successfully litigated numerous complex intellectual property and commercial cases in federal courts and the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC).  Prior to joining TKLG, Jerry was a partner at the litigation boutique Freitas Tseng & Kaufman LLP.  Before that, he was a patent litigator at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.


Jerry has represented leading foreign and domestic companies in high-stakes disputes involving a diverse range of technologies, including: semiconductor fabrication, semiconductor packaging, computer hardware, software, internet commerce, computer memory, circuit design, liquid crystal display, and LED fabrication.  As a seasoned litigator, Jerry has extensive experience in formulating and directing case strategy, developing claims and defenses, executing fact and expert discovery, oral argument, and presenting witnesses at trial.


Jerry also has an active IP counseling practice and has advised companies of all sizes on how to protect and enhance their IP assets.  In addition to helping companies develop their IP portfolio, Jerry provides strategic counseling on technology transfers, patent licenses, asset purchase agreements, risk assessments, and IP valuations.  Jerry was previously Senior Counsel with United Microelectronics Corporation, where he developed strategies for patent portfolio management, licensing, and US litigation.

Representative matters:

Zagarov v. EPIC LLC, et. al. (Cal. Superior Ct.) - Represented EPIC LLC in arbitration proceedings related to alleged breach of contract. Achieved complete arbitration victory and attorney’s fees award for client.

Bluestone Innovations, LLC v. Acer Inc., et. al. (N.D. Cal.) - Defended Acer in patent litigation related to LED technology. Case settled favorably shortly after Markman hearing.

Graphics Properties Holdings, Inc. v. Acer America, et. al. (D. Del) - Defended Acer in patent litigation related to video processing and LCD panels. Case settled favorably.

United Microelectronics Corp. v. LSI Corp. (N.D. Cal) - Represented UMC in litigation related to semiconductor design and fabrication. Case resolved as part of favorable global settlement. In re Certain Semiconductor Chips with Minimized Chip Package Size, 337-TA-630 (ITC) - Represented Acer, Nanya, and Powerchip in Section 337 investigation brought by Tessera Technologies Inc. related to BGA chip packaging. Won complete trial victory for Respondents; finding of no-violation affirmed on appeal.

Sanyo Electric Co. v. MediaTek Inc. (C.D. Cal) - Represented Mediatek in patent litigation related to optical drive controller technology. Summary judgment victory severely reduced potential damages leading to favorable settlement for client.

Prior Firm Experience

Prior to practicing law, Jerry spent many years as a researcher in biotech, working on hematopoietic stem cell, microfluidic, optical scanning, and cell marker technologies. Jerry received his BS degree in Molecular Biology from U.C. Berkeley and his J.D. from Georgetown University.
